Sanke, also known as Taisho Sanke or Taisho Sanshoku, are one of the most respected varieties in the Nishikigoi world. Originating in Japan’s Taisho era, Sanke are defined by a clean white base, vibrant red hi, and refined black sumi—a three-color balance that gives the variety its classic elegance.
Developed from Kohaku bloodlines, Sanke preserve the graceful red-and-white foundation of Kohaku while adding black accents for depth and contrast. The best Sanke do not rely on heavy patterning; their beauty comes from restraint, clarity, and balance, with each color strengthening the overall composition without overpowering the fish.
A quality Sanke reflects:
✓ Clean, bright shiroji as the foundation
✓ Rich, balanced hi with strong visual flow
✓ Elegant sumi placed as refined accents
✓ Classic Gosanke heritage and refinement
✓ A timeless three-color presence in the pond
