Niigata Breeder: Ooya

Tucked high in the mountainous Koguriyama area of Ojiya, Niigata, Ooya Koi Farm, also known as Kataoka, is one of Japan’s respected historic koi farms. Founded in 1961 by Tetsutaro Kataoka and now led by master breeder Taro Kataoka, the farm spans roughly 50,000 square meters and remains focused on meticulous small-batch breeding rather than mass production.

Ooya’s legacy began with a bold choice. As a young breeder, Tetsutaro pursued koi full-time and challenged local convention by breeding the difficult Taisho Sanke variety. His early success shaped the farm’s philosophy: a koi should not be judged only at rest, but by how its color, structure, and presence come alive in motion.

The farm is especially celebrated for its world-class Asagi, admired for soft blue coloration, clean netting, clear skin, and rare forms such as Yuki Asagi and Kaburi Yuki Asagi. Ooya also produces powerful Gosanke, including Showa, Sanke, and Kohaku, known for strong bodies, rich hi, bright shiroji, and deep sumi.

What makes Ooya distinctive is its deep connection to Niigata’s heritage. Tetsutaro also preserved the ancient tradition of Tsunotsuki fighting bulls, believing their endurance, bone structure, and strength helped refine his eye for selecting koi with powerful frames and lasting quality.
